The Public Works Department provides maintenance and repairs on City streets, sidewalks, medians, curbs, gutters, traffic markings and street signs.
Streets
The Streets division maintains and repairs 241 centerline miles of roadway surfaces on City streets. Street maintenance and repairs include resurfacing roadways, sealing cracks, filling potholes, and replacing deteriorated asphalt. Preventive maintenance is performed to extend the life of City streets and keep them looking and riding as comfortable as possible.
When the condition of a street reaches the point where preventive maintenance is no longer cost-effective, the street is then placed on the pavement reconstruction list by the Department of Engineering Services. Reconstruction involves removing the entire roadway and replacing it.

Sidewalks
The Sidewalks Division maintains 494 curb miles and repairs the concrete surfaces of City streets, sidewalks, curbs and gutters. Most sidewalks are repaired by removal or replacement of concrete via a service request . Sidewalks raised more than ¾- 1 inch meet the criteria for inspection and possible repair. If the raise has a clean straight edge it may be ground down to meet the adjacent sidewalk.

Traffic Control Signs
The Traffic Division maintains all City signs and street markings in the public right-of-way. Traffic sign devices consist of signs that regulate, warn, and guide motorists and pedestrians in and around the public right-of-way. Such signs include, but are not limited to: stop, parking, speed limit, pedestrian crossing, school zone and street name signs. All City traffic signs are maintained to current State and Federal standards based on the California Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).
